Looking for God—Book of Job

A Reader’s Guide

Job, a wealthy and blameless and upright man, who feared God and turned away from evil, lost everything that he had, through no fault of his own, and was smitten with loathsome sores. Job bemoaned his terrible fate, and could see no reason why it should be, but refused to curse God. Nevertheless he cried out to God for relief. His friends figured that he must have done something terrible to deserve this, and they rebuked him and urged him to repent and return to God. Job protested that, in spite of his past sins, he was faithful and righteous before God, and confident that God would vindicate him. While Job’s friends talked about God, and did not always get it right, Job addressed God directly, and earnestly looked for God in his suffering. God says at the end that Job was right in doing this, and his friends were wrong. God gives Job a personal conducted tour of all the wonders and mysteries of creation. God gets Job to breathe the wild free air of God’s good sovereignty over all things.
